Helen Pattskyn

Born on 17 January, 1969, I grew up in Hazel Park, Michigan, and have lived in the Great Lakes State my entire life (other than a few short stints to work the Georgia and Ohio Rennissiance Festivals... but that's another story).  I started writing seriously in middle school (although I wrote my first "real" short story in the second grade). In addition to being a writer, I'm an artist and tarot card reader.

After high school, I attended the Specs Howard School of Broadcast Arts with the intention of becoming a disc jockey; I didn't graduate, but I did learn alot, and don't regret the experience.

I spent the next dozen-plus years sorting out what I wanted to do when I grew up, continuing to write and paint, learn tarot, read, sew, live my life, and eventually complete a two year library degree at Oakland Community College (with well over 100 credit hours under my belt, because I took the classes I wanted to take, whether they were related to my official major at the time or not).

I've published numerous fanfiction pieces online, and displayed my artwork at local science fiction conventions on and off for the last ten years. (I came back to it seriously in 2008.) In 2010, I wrote an erotic paranormal romance novel called Heart's Home, that was picked up by Dreamspinner Press (release date: Dec. 2011).

I applied for the job to write Ghosthunting Michigan because I've been interested in the paranormal since I was very young. I remember being glued to the television watching In search of…, back in the ‘70’s. As I got a little older, I read every book in the library on psychic phenomena, cryptozoology, mediumship, ghosts, and haunted houses. (And I'll admit it, Ghostbusters was one of my favorite movies! So was Beetledjuice.) I bought my first deck of tarot cards when I was 19--but don't think that I went into this project with anything more, or less, than an open mind and healthy dose of skeptisism. I wanted to do this book because I love seeing old houses and historic buildings (if I had a better head for math, I would have gone into arcetecture), visiting cemetaries, talking to people, and taking road trips.

When I'm not hitting the road to visit historical locations or hang out at local science fiction conventions, you can find me in my backyard, gazing through a telescope by night and growing flowers and herbs by day. Feel free to drop me an email at thylacine.yawn@gmail.com.
